The Space DTF met formally for 5 meetings this week see agenda (http:/cgi.omg.org/docs?space/2001-02-16.doc): Sun Feb 25 - Roadmap Review Mon Feb 26 - Reference Architecture Review Tue Feb 27 - Space DTF Plenary Wed Feb 28 - T&C Services, SLE Management, Ref Arch Thu Mar 01 - Telecon on T&C Data Specification These minutes as well as all presentations can be retrieved off of the omg web site. The easiest way to do this is to go to the Space DTF web site : www.omg.org/homepages/space There was also considerable work performed outside of the meetings and I would like to thank all that participated. Sunday Night (Feb 25) : ROADMAP Participants: James Wetherbee Aeroflex Altair jimw@altaira.com Roger Thompson Science Systems roger.thompson@scisys.co.uk Joan Dunham CSC jdunham@csc.com John Pietras GST pietras@gst.com Kevin Rice GST / GSFC Code 588 rice@gst.com Fred Brosi GST brosi@gst.com Mike Rackley NASA GSFC mike.rackley@gsfc.nasa.gov Roger Burkhart Deere & Co. rogerb@up.net Jim presented his ideas on a Telemetry and Commanding Work Area. Ideas focused on three areas : one area wrapping the transport and packaging (frames, CTLUs,..), one focusing on defining the data necessary to support telemetry and commanding for a particular mission, and one on distribution and access of telemetry and commanding information. The transport and packaging area has been addressed by the CCSDS, and there is little impetus to try to create any OMG standards in this area. The second area was seen as the most promising for the generation of an RFP. It would begin the development of a common set of terms, a need that was a constant theme throughout the discussions all week. It was unanimously agreed that the data specification area was fairly well understood and there are enough providers and consumers in this area to justify the existence of standards. A few other areas of interest are SOIF - CCSDS work in the area of spacecraft On-board Interface Facility Transport level work (SCSP-TP to CORBA mapping) SLE Service Management SLE Services We also discussed the schedule we need to follow in order to get something out by the Paris meeting in April. We agreed to try to push the T & C Data Specification RFP, to have it ready by April. Another area we identified (and truthfully did not work all that much) is to identify the main players in each of the work area, and try to identify whether they would be interested in developing standards in the OMG. Monday Morning (Feb 25) : Space DTF Reference Architecture Participants: James Wetherbee Aeroflex Altair jimw@altaira.com Roger Thompson Science Systems roger.thompson@scisys.co.uk Joan Dunham CSC jdunham@csc.com John Pietras GST pietras@gst.com Kevin Rice GST / GSFC Code 588 rice@gst.com Fred Brosi GST brosi@gst.com Peter Shames NASA JPL peter.shames@jpl.nasa.gov Michael Stoloff NASA JPL michael.stoloff@jpl.nasa.gov Alan Olson Aerospace Corp alan.d.olson@aero.eng Sam Bowser Aerospace Corp samuel.e.bowser@aero.org Pug Gutridge CIS gutridge@cherokee-inc.com Janice Champion Boeing janice.a.champion@boeing.com Mike Rackley NASA GSFC mike.rackley@gsfc.nasa.gov Greg Malone Boeing The meeting started off with Peter Shames giving a presentation of the Reference Architecture. This was well accepted (and we think understood) by most of the group. Pug Guthridge, suggested briefing the Reference Architecture to C4I and other groups as well. The next section of the meeting was going over the Reference Architecture document. This was not as well received. The document must go through some serious revision in order to make it a useful document. We agreed that it is probably not in the best interest of the group to go into too much detail in the document (we do not need to flush out all areas), but we should at least look at supplying some exemplary scenarios. Roger Thompson then presented a diagram showing a different view of the architecture. This also looked like a very good way of viewing the architecture, and members were tasked with looking at how Roger's diagrams and the Reference Architecture diagrams could be integrated. Some points that came out of the meeting : 1. The reference architecture does a very good job of identifying some of the common functions that are pervasive through all elements in the architecture. It is important to ensure that any RFP or RFI issued by this group ensure that responders address these issues (mandatory requirements or evaluation criteria in the RFPs). 2. In the short term, we are focusing on the Telemetry, Commanding, Housekeeping area, and we need to reflect that in the Reference Architecture. 3. Peter Shames has developed a simple commanding scenario to show how it plays in the Ref Arch. (see 01-02-07.ppt) Discussion continued is small side groups throughout the afternoon. Jim, Janice, and Greg Malone talked quite a bit about the Data Specification area, trying to map some of Boeings requirements into an RFP format. Peter and Roger and Joan worked some of the Reference Architecture scenarios, and Roger, Joan, and Kevin worked some of the T&C Service and Access areas. Tuesday (Feb 28) - Space DTF Plenary Participants James Wetherbee Aeroflex Altair jimw@altaira.com Roger Thompson Science Systems roger.thompson@scisys.co.uk Joan Dunham CSC jdunham@csc.com John Pietras GST pietras@gst.com Kevin Rice GST / GSFC Code 588 rice@gst.com Fred Brosi GST brosi@gst.com Peter Shames NASA JPL peter.shames@jpl.nasa.gov Michael Stoloff NASA JPL michael.stoloff@jpl.nasa.gov Alan Olson Aerospace Corp alan.d.olson@aero.eng Janice Champion Boeing janice.a.champion@boeing.com Ed Wrench ITT Industries ed.wrench@itt.com The Space DTF plenary began in the morning of a review of the Sunday, Monday morning, and Monday evening work. Fred Brosi then presented about a CCSDS effort called SLE Management (see space/2001-02-05.ppt). Joan Dunham was elected co-chair of the group, filling the vacancy Bill Branch left. Peter Shames nominated Joan, Janice Champion seconded. All were in favor (6 voting members). Jim presented an overview of the Space Day XML presentations from December. Janice Champion then presented on how the Boeing Satellite Manufacturers currently manage their database and distribute them to their Ground Control System customers, their test customers, and any internal customers. Janice's hope was that there was already a standard that Boeing could use in this area. This again exemplified a need to start moving on the Telemetry and Commanding Data Specification RFP. Dan Creighton and Steve Hughes from JPL gave a presentation on the use of XML and Federated Databases. The focus on this talk was the ability to retrieve data (focused on science data) from a myriad of data sources based on well defined metadata queries. We also received a presentation from Zbignew M.. on a Generic Sonar Interface RFI (originating from the C4I SIG). The Space DTF Task Force then voted to issue the RFI (Jim - vote to issue, Joan - second, Peter - white ballot). Fred Waskiewicz of the OMG Staff gave a brief talk on how the OMG can help - use the Space DTF Web site (come on chairman - clean it up!). Also use the OMG Business staff to try to get others interested in the group. We then worked on the Agenda for Paris. The first draft is as follows : Tue Apr 24 0900-1200 Space DTF Workshop Tue Apr 24 1300-1800 Reference Architecture ; Draft RFP Wed Apr 25 1000-1200 SCPS Wed Apr 25 1300-1800 T & C Service Specification "RFP" Thu Apr 26 0900-1500 Space DTF Plenary Wed Morning (Feb 28) - RANDOM STUFF Roger Thompson discussed the T&C Services area focusing on access mechanisms in general, and specifically for the T&C area. John Pietras gave a short presentation on how implementers might try to deploy SLE Services and SLE Management products. It is something we keep in mind when developing RFPs and multiple related RFPs. Peter Shames presented a few more slides on the Reference Architecture trying to support the layered approach a little more specifically. Thursday Morning (Mar 1) - Telecon with XML Presenters from December Participants : Jim Wetherbee Aeroflex Altair jimw@altaira.com Pat Cappalaere ICS pat@interfacecontrol.com Lou Reich CSC louis.i.reich@gsfc.nasa.gov Gerry Simon Lockheed Martin, CERES Gerry.Simon-contractor@jntf.osd.mil Joan Dunham CSC jdunham@csc.com Don Sawyer GSFC donald.sawyer@gsfc.nasa.gov We had an hour telecon discussing the start of the Telemetry and Commanding Data Specification RFP. A few key points were identified: There should be more information on how this particular specification will fit into the overall Space DTF Architecture. Jim will provide a few diagrams. There is a concern from a number of the vendors of the cost of developing one of these standards in the OMG. The vendors have also stated that the government (Air Force, NASA, ESA) should get involved as well to ensure the vendors that this effort is worthwhile. Some concern was expressed about the scope of the proposal - is it too small a scope and should it look at other data aspects including, for example, archiving of the data. There is also a concern that the scope is too large, that maybe just a telemetry subset should be the focus. It looks like we need to do a little more work here. Again discussions of who we can get to be involved, the marketing, whether the space industry is large enough to support this effort, etc. Some more work to do here. OVERALL : A very good meeting, with quite a bit of work performed by individuals and small groups outside of normal meeting times. We should try to not schedule all of the time we have- but leave some time open so that some of the creative minds in the group have some time to work together.
